The Birthing

Although slightly misty, a full moon lit night skies bright in Wallachia, which is now part of Romania. Shined every so brightly on several trees with a bluish tint color. A slight breeze rustled through the trees. An owl sat on one of those trees and watched ever so closely for its meal. No matter how meager it might be for some. Its eyes gazed on a tiny animal that skittered across the ground for food. The owl slowly spread its wings, as not to scare its meal away, and began to swoop down towards the little creature. Out of one of the bushes, a cat jumped out and pounced on the owl’s meal. The owl was nearly knocked down, but was able to maneuver onto a nearby tree branch. The owl looked at the cat down below that was holding what was suppose to be the owl’s meal in its mouth. It hooted furiously at the cat for taking its meal, but it dared not to swoop down at the cat for there will be other meal. The cat didn’t cared what the owl thought for the fact that the tiny creature was hers now and walked off with it in her mouth.

The moonlight lit the way on a road leading towards a small castle suitable for a someone that is one of the advisors for a Prince that ruled there. A few leaves in front of the house moved every so slightly across the other side by the breeze. This particular night was filled with both great joy and great sadness all wrapped up in one. Inside the house, there were of hallways that lead towards different rooms. Stairs lead up to extra rooms on other floors through out, but in particular lead towards a room that was bustled with activity. A loud and painful screams of a woman radiated from that room. There were men standing outside of the room. One of them pacing back and forth as he waited for news of his wife. Inside the room, a woman, with long light brown hair and somewhat petite with beautiful features, laid on a bed with her feet propped up with sweat pouring down her face. A midwife sat on a stool at the foot of the bed as she monitors the progress of the birth. There was another woman beside the pregnant woman, wiping the sweat off her forehead. After several hours of labor, the midwife was able to see the baby’s head crowning.

“You are doing fine. The baby is almost here.”, the midwife said to the woman. The labored woman shakes her head a bit. “I.. I can’t do this any more.”, Miruna said. She was totally exhausted from being in labor for so long. She had three other sons before this child was born and this labor was the hardest on her body. Another woman, carrying a large bowl of water and a towel over her right arm, rushed into the room. The midwife told the other woman to place the bowl near her and looked back at Miruna as the bowl of water was set next to her.

“Yes. You can do it. One more push and he’ll be out.”, the midwife said to her. Miruna wasn’t for sure if she had enough strength or not, but she mustered up all the strength she could find to start pushing one last time. The baby began to slide right on out as she pushed him out and was caught by the midwife. “It’s a boy!”, the midwife said as the baby boy screamed loudly in her arms. She wiped him off and cut the umbilical cord before she hand him over to Miruna to hold. Miruna was too week to hold her fourth son but was able to muster a smile as she looked at him. “He looks so much like his grandfather.”, she said as she placed a kiss on his forehead. “Let Sandu see his son.”, she said to the midwife.

Sandu was standing outside of the room and heard that he had another son. How glorious it was for him to have four sons now to continue on his name. The midwife opened the door and brought Sandu’s son out to him. Sandu came over to her with out reached arms to hold his son and took a good look at him. “My son. My son.”, he said as he held him. “Such powerful voice you have. So much like your grandfather, Nicolae.”, he said as he looked up at the midwife. “He shall be called Nicolae. After his grandfather.”, he said as he looked back at him. One of the maidservants, with a worried look on her face, came out to get the midwife. The midwife quickly went back into the room to check on Miruna, followed by Sandu with Nicolae in his arms. One of the maidservants came over as Sandu handed Nicolae to her.

The midwife went over towards Miruna and tried to wake her up. “Please, Miruna, wake up.”, she said as she gentle patted on her face. Miruna didn’t respond at all. Her eyes were still open, but was not breathing at all. “What is going on? Why is she not responding?”, Sandu demanded. Tears began to form in the midwife’s eyes as she looked over towards Sandu. “I’m sorry. The birth must have been too much for her.”, she said. Sandu went towards Miruna and kneel down next to her. Tears streamed down his face as he gentle kisses his wife’s lips. “Miruna. My dear wife.”, he said as his bottom lip slightly quivered. His hand gentle brushed her hair and then gentle closed her eyes with his hand. He looked up at the maidservant that was holding Nicolae, went over to her and in order to hold Nicolae. Sandu knew that it wasn’t Nicolae’s fault that Miruna died. It was something that happens to some families. “Find a wet nurse. Quickly.”, he said to the midwife as he went to over to a chair and sat down. The midwife gave a nod and left the room.
