What to do?

Mike looked at Riker for a moment, 'Sir." he paused, "I just want to apologize for the cadet's actions. If I had seen this earlier we would have not had this tradgity." Riker paused a moment in his walk and looked at Mike. "It is not your fault, return to your quarters and take the rest of the day off." Mike went to attention and spoke, "Yes sir." Mike then walked to his quarters and took a nap.

The day begins anew

Mike woke up to the blaring of a alarm klaxon from the station. He quickly rose and put his uniform on. He rushed to the door in a hurry and walked passed into the corridor. Within a few moments he was at his station. He looked over at the three other personnel that were assigned his section. “Report”, Mike said. “A trainer just blew up sir. We are not picking up any survivors at this time.” Mike made his way to his console and looked up the sensor logs. A spark of anger passed over Mike, “Crewmen, why was there cadets flying the range at this hour when there were no range safety officers on site?” The crewmen looked shaken. “Sir, we are receiving the group prefix for the flight, it was Red Squad.” Mike stood up. “Where are the rest of them?” After a few moments of looking at his screens the crewmen responded, “They are returning to their sections now sir. It looks like they are leaving in a few minutes back to Earth.” Mike was at the turbolift door. “Which docking port?” The crewmen looked down, “Port 3 sir.” The door closed. Mike input his destination and was soon at docking port 3. He thought it was odd that they would be going to a port for shuttling passengers to larger ships. When he arrived at his destination he then found out why, the Enterprise was there. He walked over to where their crew was assembled. He looked at Commander Riker, “Sir.” Riker looked at Mike. “Ensign.” Mike saw the other 6 members of Red Squad who were present. Mike walked over to them. “I am placing you under arrest, for breaking the range rules resulting in a death.” Two station security guards came up behind the 6 as did Commander Riker.

A bold beginning

Mike Hunter, a newly graduated Ensign from Starfleet Academy, was walking from the large celebration after the ceremonies were completed. He stood gazing at the vast expanses of green around the academy properties. He knew this was the last time he would ever be able to see these ground in a long time. He had spent the past six years in schooling, he had graduated from two different academy programs. The most obvious by his red pin striping was that of the Command School, but what was not as obvious was that he spent two years after command school in intelligence school. However until he was given his first ship assignment, he was given a posting at the IO flight range. Mike dreaded the assignment. He figured it was some cruel test that some officer that had been rubbed the wrong way by Mike had found this as payback. On the other hand this mind numbing assignment might also be a test to see how he performs under the most uninteresting of assignments.

Taking a PADD out of his pocket Mike looked it over for a moment. He had read the PADD countless times, but the ordered did not change, “To IO station I go…” He trailed off. Mike went to his dorm room to gather his packed belongings and say good bye to his roommate. In typical Vulcan fashion his roommate, was stoic as ever, T’Met gave him the Vulcan hand greeting and wished him well on his journey. With that Mike was on his way to the shuttle port to begin his new life. He arrived early so that he could watch the comings and goings of the shuttles. He always enjoyed watching the ships land and take off.

Hours later his shuttle arrived and he began to board it. He had stowed his luggage and took his seat. A man walked to his seat and handed him a PADD, “I think you dropped this sir.” Mike looked at the man and the PADD, it was obviously not his PADD, but he received it none the less. “Thank you, sir”, Mike said. He stowed the PADD away to read later when he was at the IO flight range.
The flight lasted only 73 minutes, but Mike was already restless to get off of the small in system transport shuttle. There were two other newly graduated ensigns on the shuttle with him, and they insisted on constant chatter and gossip as if they had never left the Academy. Mike and the rest of the passengers felt a sudden jerk as the ship came in for a landing. “This is the captain speaking, we have just landed at the IO flight range station, I hope you enjoyed your trip.” Mike stood up, and retrieved his items. He made his way out of the shuttle and onto the processing platform. A crewmen walked Mike to his assigned quarters without a word. Mike nodded to the fellow and closed the door. He looked around the small sparse room and found only sleeping pallet. He was shocked since, he was told to expect to have 3 other roommates. He unpacked his few belongings and finally read the PADD he was given. It was orders from SF Intel. He was to observe the cadets as they flew the range for prospects for intelligence to recruit. He had to do this task along with his normal tasks as a flight range officer.

After settling in Mike went to the food court and ordered his meal. After sitting down next to a view port he watched cadets flying around in space in the one man ships. Upon finishing his meal Mike returned to his quarters. It was late and he needed to go to bed. He arrived at his quarters and upon laying down on his pallet he was out cold.
